If you’re on the hunt for a place that embodies the heart of Virginia’s outdoor beauty and small-town charm, look no further than Abingdon. Nestled along Interstate 81 close to the Tennessee border, this quaint Virginia town has become one of my absolute favorite spots to adventure in Virginia, offering a perfect blend of nature, culture and relaxation.

While preserving its historical legacy, Abingdon has evolved into a vibrant and dynamic town. It embraces tourism, outdoor recreation, and a thriving arts scene, while maintaining a deep connection to its heritage. You can explore museums, galleries, boutiques and culinary delights, all while immersing yourself in the town’s storied past.

One of the standout features of Abingdon for me is its central location, making it the perfect hub for exploring nearby hiking trails and natural wonders. Here’s a peek at some must-visit spots and exciting activities both in town and nearby!

Virginia Creeper Trail: Best known as a premier cycling route, the gentle grade and well-maintained surface make this 34-mile trail suitable for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Many hikers choose to trek certain sections or use the trail as a starting point for longer hikes into the surrounding wilderness areas.

It brings together hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, vendors, and locals to celebrate the Appalachian Trail and the spirit of hiking and adventure. There are a range of events and activities over the course of the weekend, including a hiker parade!

When it comes to Abingdon’s culinary scene, some highlights include:

The Tavern: Established in 1779, The Tavern is one of Virginia’s oldest restaurants and a historical landmark. The menu features Southern-inspired cuisine with dishes like fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and savory barbecue options.

128 Pecan: This cozy restaurant focuses on farm-to-table dining, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients from creative salads and gourmet sandwiches to flavorful entrees like roasted duck breast and pan-seared scallops.

Rain: If you’re in the mood for upscale dining, Rain is the place to be. With a focus on modern American fare, menu highlights include seared diver scallops, filet mignon, and artisanal desserts.
