Skiing Scam: How Gary di Silvestri and Angelica Morrone Made it to Sochi

Angelica Morrone and Gary di Silvestri.

Gary di Silvestri and Angelica Morrone made headlines as the husband-and-wife team who would be competing in cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Despite living in Montana, the duo represented Dominica—an island in the Caribbean that had never before sent athletes to compete.

Although the story seemed a bit strange, since the couple gained citizenship legally, not much negative attention was given.

That is, until Deadspin reporter Dave McKenna began digging around following Morrone not showing up to her event because of an injury while her husband failed miserably in his event—he only made it a few hundred meters in the 15K men’s classic before giving up.

McKenna uncovered a fair amount of interesting information about the couple, such as how they bought their citizenship to Dominica by depositing $175,000 “into the appropriate account at the National Commercial Bank of Dominica,” as well as paying the Ministry of Finance $3,530 in tariffs and fees.

On a number of social websites, di Silvestri claims to be “a two-time state wrestling champion” and that he “rowed for a national championship team at Georgetown,” both facts the journalist discovered were false.

As for Morrone, she was in the middle of an international scandal revolving around winter sports competitions and presenting bribes in order to have a certain city awarded the title as host during the 1990s.

It’s obvious di Silvestri, 47, and Morrone, 48, aren’t what one would call “Olympic material,” but they still met the requirements for competing.
