REI to Open its First Indiana Store in Indianapolis Next Year

    Seattle, WA, Jun 10, 2011 –

REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), a national retailer providing quality outdoor gear and clothing, today announced plans to open a new store in Indianapolis, Ind. at the Plaza at Castleton next spring.

The one-story, approximately 23,800 square-foot store will offer products from the top brands of outdoor gear and apparel for camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling, snow sports and travel. REI Indianapolis will house a bike shop for quick assemblies and repairs, and a seasonal gear rental department for customers looking to test new activities. The store’s community space will allow REI and its local partners to host classes, presentations and events to educate customers and members on a variety of outdoor topics.

While anyone may shop at REI, the company operates as a consumer cooperative. Members pay a one-time $20 fee to receive a share in the company’s profits through an annual member refund based on their purchases. Earlier this year, $94.3 million in annual refunds was distributed to more than 4.4 million active members based on the co-op’s 2010 sales. REI members also receive a discount on gear rentals and REI Adventures trips, and free shipping for purchases of $75 or more on REI.com.

“We look forward to inspiring, educating and outfitting Indianapolis outdoor enthusiasts for their adventures beginning next spring,” said Michelle Yancy, REI retail director for the Midwest district. “By partnering with the local community, the new store will help advance REI’s commitment to increase participation in outdoor activities and volunteerism in maintaining natural spaces.”

In the communities where REI has a presence, the company helps restore and maintain local trails, parks and waterways through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, volunteer opportunities and grant support. In 2010, the company granted $3.7 million to more than 320 nonprofits through its locally driven grants program. The new store will expand these efforts into Indianapolis.

REI Indianapolis will be the first REI store in Indiana. The company currently operates 117 retail stores in 28 states and two online stores – rei.com and REI-OUTLET.com – and offers its own line of award-winning REI brand and Novara bike products.

For the new store, REI will recruit approximately 50 employees who share a passion for the outdoors and a commitment to quality customer service. Employment information will be available at www.rei.com/jobs approximately three months prior to the opening. REI has been recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” for 14 consecutive years.
