SPRINGFIELD, Oregon – Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, will officially open the doors of its Springfield, Ore., store – the first in the state – Thursday, May 5. The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will include remarks from Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg and Cabela’s Chief Executive Officer Tommy Millner, among other special guests.
The ceremony will conclude with an appearance from Oregon native Cameron Hanes, also an Under Armour Arsenal Athlete and host of Outdoor Channel’s “Elk Chronicles,” who instead of cutting the ribbon, will shoot it with a bow and arrow, to be immediately followed by the first customers entering the store. The opening day festivities, which will begin with live music by local country band Bump in the Road around 2:00 p.m., are only the beginning of the company’s celebration of its 33rd store.
In the three days following the grand opening, Cabela’s will host more than a dozen outdoor television personalities as well as hunting and fishing experts at the Springfield store. Guests include Troy and Jacob Landry of History Channel’s “Swamp People,” and Fred and Michele Eichler, hosts of several Sportsman Channel programs.
Cabela’s, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, will also hold several giveaways beginning opening day to run through May 15. The company will award more than $35,000 in prizes, including a New Mexico elk hunting trip, an Alaskan fishing trip, a Cabela’s drift boat, a Browning Citori Cabela’s 50th anniversary 12-gauge shotgun and other hunting, fishing and camping gear.
The Springfield location is the second of three Cabela’s stores to open during the outfitter’s golden anniversary year. The Allen, Texas, store opened on April 14 to a large, enthusiastic crowd, and the company expects a similar scene in Springfield. Cabela’s will also open a store in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, this summer.
The 58,000-square-foot Springfield store at 2800 Gateway Street anchors the west side of Gateway Mall in retail space previously occupied by Ashley Furniture. The building’s exterior reflects Cabela’s traditional store model, while the inside highlights the company’s efficient next-generation layout featuring murals of well-known natural features in Oregon such as Crater Lake, as well as trophy animal mounts, including a record-breaking Roosevelt elk taken in Benton County in 2002.
Gateway Mall, which opened in 1990, features a blend of retail shopping, entertainment and dining opportunities, including three department stores, an indoor children’s play area, 29 theater screens and an extensive selection of national retailers and restaurants. The mall features increased access via the area’s award-winning rapid transit system.
Store hours will be Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Visit cabelas.com/springfield for a complete list and details of opening weekend events.
A schedule of special guest appearance times is attached.
