ABYC Hosting Educational Events at IBEX

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) will host events at IBEX.

What do networking, game shows and legal information have in common? A whole new level of fun and engagement with the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC). At the International Boatbuilders’ Exposition & Conference (IBEX), September 30–October 2, in Tampa, Florida, ABYC will offer several entertaining and interactive events.

On Wednesday, October 1, ABYC will host a Coffee and Compliance conversation in the Compliance, Standards and Education Pavilion. Attendees can meet with experts in marine certification and standards for informal networking to discuss current trends and compliance issues affecting the industry. Exhibitors are invited from 9–11:00 a.m.; all attendees are welcome from 10–11:00 a.m.

IBEX participants are invited to show off their knowledge of standards and safety by playing ABYC Standards Jeopardy, based on the popular TV show. Doug Alling, an ABYC Certified Technician, will host this fun and fast-paced game, with the ABYC Standards Manual serving as final judge. Overall daily winners will be awarded an ABYC prize package. Standards Jeopardy will take place from 3–3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 1-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, at the Exhibitor Workshop Theatre located on the show floor at the back of aisles 200 and 300.

ABYC, in partnership with the law firms of K&L Gates and Reed Smith will also present an unprecedented opportunity at IBEX this year. During the session Legal C’s, seasoned attorneys Christina Paul and Carrie Plater will be on hand to answer attendees’ most pressing legal questions in a one-on-one setting. “This is a fantastic opportunity; whether you’re concerned about product liability, considering expert witness work, or even have questions about an accident that occurred on your property, Christina and Carrie can discuss it with you,” said ABYC president John Adey. Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, from 2–3:30 p.m. and Wednesday, October 1, from 10–11:30 a.m. in room 25. Signup is required by e-mailing Shannon Seipp at sseipp@abycinc.org or at ABYC booth 534 during the show.

Attendees who stop by the ABYC booth to join, or renew their membership, will receive a free CD copy of Standards Supplement 54. Not only will they continue their involvement in the marine industry’s premier safety and standards organization, but they will leave Tampa armed with the latest standards and technical information updates and revisions.

Since 1954, ABYC has developed safety standards for boat design, construction, equipage, repair and maintenance. The essential global source of marine industry technical information, ABYC’s product safety standards, credentialing, education, training, and other tools help members make boating safer.
