Teen Sneaks Past Guards, Climbs Roof of One World Trade Center

A 16-year-old from New Jersey managed to sneak out of his house at night, crawl through a hole in a fence, and pass by several layers of security before making it to the spire of New York City’s One World Trade Center building. Completed in May 2013, the building is the tallest in the nation at 1,776 feet.

The teenager, Justin Casquejo, was accompanied by a “clueless” elevator operator who dropped him off on the 88th floor. He then climbed the stairs to the 104th floor, sliding past a sleeping guard who has since been fired. The elevator operator was reassigned to a different position.

He then climbed to the roof and made it to the antenna, he told police. Casquejo then spent two hours on top of the building taking photos, until a construction worker finally discovered him.

“He came here and he ran hog wild,” said a WTC worker, according to the New York Post.

When the Post reached out to the teenager for comment, he said, “Ha ha, oh yeah, that. Right. I would really love to talk to you guys because I have a lot that I want to say about it. I was told that I just can’t [talk] without permission.”

But his recent tweet that read, “Inspired,” seemed to sum up his feelings. By skimming through Casquejo’s Facebook, it’s clear he’s fascinated with the building, as one photo features him posing with the building, also known as the Freedom Tower, in the background.

When police asked him how he managed to get into the building, he laughed and said he thought the building was supposed to be cloaked in a “ring of steel.”

“I walked around the construction site and figured out how to access the Freedom Tower rooftop,” he said, according to court papers.

He is now facing a misdemeanor charge for trespassing. None of the security companies involved would provide a comment to the Post or other news outlets.
