Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn has taken her passion for winter sports back to her training ground of Colorado in an attempt to get children outdoors learning to ski and snowboard this winter. Her program, “School of Shred,” offers four days of free skiing and snowboarding to fifth and sixth graders in Colorado.

According to a news release published by Vail Resorts, Vonn’s program includes four free days of skiing or riding at top resorts in Colorado including Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin. Also included with the pass is rental equipment, except at Arapahoe Basin, and a complimentary first-timer ski lesson. The lessons and rentals are available from December 2-15 and January 5-31, which is planned in coordination with “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month.” However, the four lift passes can be used at any time, but remember the complimentary equipment and lessons are only available within the specific dates.

“Vail Resorts’ ‘School of Shred’ program is a great way to help encourage kids to stay active by getting them outside and on the mountain,” Vonn said in the news release. “It’s so important for kids to get involved with sports in general at a young age. To be able to offer them the opportunity to ski and snowboard for free is something I think all Colorado kids and families should take advantage of this winter.”

In order to be eligible for the program, children must be enrolled in fifth or sixth grade. Parents can take their kids to sign up at any Front Range Vail Resorts’ Epic pass sales location that is open this fall. Parents or guardians must bring documentation that shows the child is a student, such as a report card or student ID that indicates their grade, or a valid birth certificate. The students need to be present at the time the Vail Resorts “School of Shred” pass is assigned, as they will need a photo taken. Registration is open now and will close on November 24.

“School of Shred” started back in 2008 at Vail Resorts with the hope of establishing a life-long passion for the outdoors in children.

Front Range pass sales locations include Colorado Ski and Golf (Aurora, Arvada, Colorado Springs and Littleton), Colorado Ski and Sports in Park Meadows, Boulder Ski Deals, Breeze Ski Rentals in Lakewood, and Outpost Sunsport in Fort Collins.
