Michigan DNR Celebrates Opening of Crystal Lake Boating Access Site June 7

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will mark the opening of the new Crystal Lake boating access site in Frankfort (Benzie County) with a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, at the site, 5572 Mollineaux Road.

The event will include the sign unveiling followed by refreshments, including a taste of Pure Michigan Caramel apple ice cream – the official flavor of Michigan state parks.

Work on the new site, which includes a five-lane launch with staging pier, boardwalk, ADA-accessible facilities and ample parking, began in August 2010. The project – which included road redesign and construction, a new storm water system and a new alignment for the Betsie Valley Trail – was completed in cooperation with the Crystal Lake Watershed Association, the Crystal Lake Property Rights Association and the Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail.

Funding for this project is generated from the Michigan State Waterways Fund. Waterways funding is derived from boat registrations, marine fuel taxes and user fees, and is, by law, restricted to uses related to land acquisition, development, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities. No funding for this project comes from the state’s general fund.

For details on the project, contact Troy Rife, Northwest regional field planner, DNR Parks and Recreation Division, at 231-775-9727.
