    Legal Assistant/ Paralegal – Cascade Designs

    Support Cascade Designs, Inc.’s (CDI) Legal Counsel (this position’s manager and direct report) and the Corporate Secretary. The Legal Assistant/Paralegal’s job responsibilities will vary widely depending upon issues at hand; however, generally, the position is responsible for providing legal (and to some extent, product safety) support. While the position includes routine responsibilities such as maintaining legal dockets, managing regulatory compliance issues, and updating the corporate stock registry, it also includes frequent ad hoc assignments ranging in breadth from legal research to those secretarial in nature.

    Job Duties:

    • Intellectual Property: Organizing and maintaining patent, trademark and copyright files/dockets/databases; Reviewing, editing, and approving product and marketing literature, instructions, and images (the goal being to ensure correct usage of CDI trademarks and to ensure the legal sufficiency of marketing materials generally); Conducting patent, trademark, and prior art searches; Liaison between outside and in-house counsel.
    • Contracts: Reviewing of legal agreements; e.g., NDA/Confidentiality, distributor, consulting, representative, etc.; prepares agreements for final review by Corporate Counsel; Maintaining and auditing NDA/confidentiality files; Maintaining contracts database.
    • Research: Utilizing WestlawNext and West publications to research and report on a multitude of legal topics; including but not limited to, employment law, antitrust, product liability, etc.
    • Regulatory: Managing regulatory compliance companywide; e.g., maintaining records, fee schedules, filing, etc.: CSA, CE, AGA, KGSC, CPSC, EPA, MHRA, TGA, Law Label, Health Canada, ANSI, UL, and ISO; Initiating and overseeing the testing and certification/registration of CDI products (e.g., CE, CSA, etc.); Reviewing, editing, and approving product packaging, hang tags, instructions, and warnings; Researching and advising on language requirements (e.g., Charter of the French language).
    • Product Safety: Assisting with product safety issues e.g., researches and collects data pertinent to closing/resolving product safety issues; Reviewing product risk assessments and FMEA results to assist in drafting and finalizing product warnings.
    • Government / Military: Coordinating and managing responses to military and government solicitations; Researching and briefing on new Federal Acquisition Regulations (FARs) and Department of Defense Federals Acquisition Regulations (DFARs); Assisting with the establishment of subcontracting and researching deals and collaboration agreements with other companies and organizations.
    • General Administration: Maintaining corporate Minute Book; Reviewing and transcribing corporate minutes; Preparing/drafting correspondence; Scheduling and arranging meetings; Maintaining stock registry; Assisting with Board of Directors meetings; Assisting with Employee Stock Bonus Plan, including organizing and preparing shareholder meetings; Arranging travel and accommodations (BOD members, Legal Counsel, etc.); Filing (e.g., contracts, independent contractor agreements, NDAs, etc.); Maintenance/management of legal library, including updating legal references with pocket parts, etc.; Manages and maintains Westlaw relationship (e.g., Westlaw Next; Thomson West publications, etc.; Proofreading and editing.

    Education, Skills and Abilities:

    • Four year college degree from an accredited university.
    • Three years of experience as a legal secretary or paralegal.
    • Understanding of legal concepts, vocabulary, and principles.
    • Interest in, and active involvement and experience with, outdoor activities (e.g., climbing, backpacking, etc.).
    • Knowledge of CDI product.
    • MS Office proficient.
    • Solid proofreading skills (must be attentive to detail and possess a solid understanding of English grammar).
    • Ability to process and digest large qualities of data—excellent analytical skills.
    • Ability to work independently, was well as the ability to collaborate with co-workers.
    • Excellent problem solving skills.
