A recent Red Bull video features surfer Jesse Billauer as he reflects on a day he went surfing in 1996. He was slammed into a sandbar by an intense wave, waking up in the hospital and learning he was paralyzed.

Billauer eventually got back in the water with the help of a team that created a custom surfboard to suit his needs.

“You don’t have to be on land. You don’t have to do nothing with your life. You can actually go do the things you love,” he said in the video. “Instead of an individual sport of surfing, now you’ve got your team.”

The video was published as part of the Wings for Life campaign to raise money for spinal cord research.
