The Truth Behind Kelly Slater’s “Shark Encounter”

On April 5, a video was released on the Association of Surfing Professionals’ YouTube account of Kelly Slater surfing as an entry to the 2014 Drug Aware Pro Challenge, which will award $10,000 to the winner with the best video. In Slater’s video that lasts less than 40 seconds, viewers can see a creature in the wave he is riding on. Many speculated it was a great white shark.

Slater was surfing in an ASP event at The Box in Western Australia, using a GoPro to capture footage. Although he is only a few meters from the animal, many have said the video could be digitally enhanced, as there’s a prize involved. Skeptics have also said the animal could be just a fish.

An answer may have come from the ASP’s Steve Robertson.

“There was actually a pod of dolphins in the area at the time, and Kelly actually got off the board and has essentially taken an underwater selfie with these dolphins,” he said, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. “There’s no doubt about it, it’s not a shark, it’s not a ray or another surfer, it’s actually a dolphin in the footage.”
