GU Boosts Roster of Endurance Athletes

GU Energy Labs, creators of the original energy gel, today announced the addition of ultra-runner Max King, distance runner Chelsea Reilly, and Ironman record holder Andrew Starykowicz to its impressive list of sponsored pro athletes. The nutrition company also recently re-signed a number of their professional triathlon, swim, bike, run and outdoor athletes heading into the 2014 competition season.

GU’s newest ultra-runner, Max King, recent champion of the 2014 Chuckanut 50K, has won several U.S. trail running championships and placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Bend, Oregon resident is set to compete at Lake Sonoma on April 12 in an attempt to qualify for Western States this coming June.

Colorado-based track and field athlete, Chelsea Reilly, is recent winner of the indoor 5K World Championships and has two national championship titles (2012 Road 10K, 2013 indoor 3K) under her belt. Coached by 2008 Olympic marathon competitor and GU Energy Vice President of Innovation, Magdalena Boulet, Reilly currently trains at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The fastest Ironman cyclist in the world, Illinois-born athlete Andrew Starykowicz, has competed as a professional triathlete since 2006. He is the champion of the 2012 Ironman Florida and Rev3 South Carolina championship series and the newest GU sponsored pro-triathlete to join the roster. Starykowicz hopes to compete at Ironman 70.3 San Juan in Puerto Rico on April 13.

“All of these national-class endurance athletes are passionate about their sport and serious about nutrition,” said GU Energy CEO Brian Vaughan. “Having the opportunity to work with them, learn from their experiences and better support their nutritional needs across all sports is unique. We look forward to these new partnerships as well as continued growth of our roster of sponsored-athletes.”

This season’s top GU-sponsored athletes also include returning athletes pro triathletes Mirinda Carfrae—a two-time IronMan World Champion—and two-time 70.3 World IronMan Champion Melissa Hauschildt, as well as endurance mountain biker Rebecca Rusch and the professional mountain biking team, Trek Factory Racing.
