Many people sought shelter inland when Hurricane Marie ripped though Los Angeles last Wednesday, but Laird Hamilton wasn’t one of them. The surfing legend was caught on video showing off his skills, taking on the 15-foot swells on his stand-up paddleboard. In an impressive display, Hamilton easily shoots the pier twice, leaving fans on the shore in awe. “The guy’s nuts,” one onlooker filming the incident said.

The 50-year-old California native wasn’t alone either. Though Hamilton may have been more able to take on such conditions, that didn’t seem to stop dozens of surfing daredevils from traveling to the southern coast to test themselves. “This is definitely the best real estate in Malibu right now, because we are seeing the best waves in, god, 30 years plus,” surfer Carlos Delolmo told ABC.

But it wasn’t all fun and games. As we reported earlier, Hamilton also became a local hero, helping to rescue one daring surfer who got caught in a wave, and was swept down toward the rocks. This was just one of 115 rescues the Los Angeles Fire Department made throughout the day.

Despite the danger, the waves did create some great surfing opportunities for people who were cautious. This recently-released video, caught by an overhead drone, combines the best of Hamilton’s SUP antics in a quick one-minute show. Check it out below:
