Video: Red Bull Aces Wingsuit Racing Recap

Watch as Red Bull athletes free fall from 8,000 feet in hopes of earning themselves the title of wingsuit flight champion.

For most of us, the idea of jumping out of a plane is terrifying, to say the least. This year, wingsuit flying, which not only requires jumping from high elevations but also prolongs freefall with the help of a parachute-fabric wingsuit, has begun to gain immense popularity. As thrill seekers continue to challenge themselves to go higher, it makes sense that Red Bull has stepped in to take the sport to the next level.

Last week, Red Bull launched its newest extreme event; the first-ever wingsuit racing competition. Fifty-two elite wingsuit fliers journeyed to San Francisco to participate in a four-round event that eventually crowned Andy Farrington the champion.

Racers were transported by pilot Luke Aikins 8,000 feet into the air. From there, heats of four competitors jumped side by side, racing toward the ground while looping around the four gates, placed at 1,000-foot intervals, between 6,500 and 3,500 feet.

Though it looks terrifying, there is something serene and inspiring about the footage captured by the racers’ GoPro cameras. The beauty of the landscape from above, as well as the unusual sight of racers zooming around flags with colors streaming behind them, is an awesome spectacle.
