When searching for buried treasure, make sure you know your way back home. One treasure hunter from Texas forgot this piece of advice and went missing in New Mexico’s Santa Fe National Forest last Thursday; she was located Saturday by New Mexico State Police and no serious injuries are reported.

Thirty-three-year-old Chanon Thompson traveled to the national forest from her home in Carrolton, Texas to search for Forrest Fenn’s fortune. Fenn’s treasure–which is worth millions of dollars–was hidden to encourage  people to get outdoors.

According to police Thompson lost her way after travelling almost seven miles into the forest last Thursday. Her boyfriend called the police and reported her missing the next day when he failed to hear from her.

Police used a team of search dogs, three aircraft, and rescue experts in the search for Thompson, finding her around 11am last Saturday morning.

If you are planning on looking for the treasure Fenn offers some advice: “Don’t look any place where a 79- or 80-year-old man could not carry a 42-pound box.”

If you can’t make it to New Mexico, however, or want to search for treasure a little closer to home then try geocaching. Geocaching is an activity in which you are given GPS coordinates to a little treasure hidden somewhere in nature and then set forth with a GPS enabled device to find it.
